Inspiration Comes in Waves

Indo Jax Childhood Cancer Surf Camp1st Annual Childhood Cancer Surf Camp

We all need a little inspiration now and then to tackle something new, study harder, get to the gym or make a sales call. If you want a true example of inspiration read on. The following email was sent to me by my dear friend. She and her husband have a love of surfing, thanks to the Indo Jax Surfing School in Wilmington, NC. After learning of outreach surf charities they were inspired to provide children with Cancer the opportunity to learn the joy of surfing. Rather than think about their personal battle with cancer, they teamed up with the Indo Jax Surf School and helped to facilitate the 1st Annual Childhood Cancer Surf Camp.
"Tonight was the first night of Indo Jax's new camp benefitting children with cancer.  It was amazing! The children and their families had the biggest smiles.  And the kids were AWESOME surfers! We had 20 kids, ages 2-14, and they were stoked and rode wave after wave.  It was a true blessing to be there and I'm humbled by what these young children and their families endure. We will be at Mallard St, Access 10 Wrightsville Beach on Wednesday and Thursday too, 5-7 pm. Come on out and check it out. I guarantee you'll leave with a smile." I hope you are inspired by this example of love, kindness and perseverance. For more information please click the following links.

3D Food Engineer? That’s Pretty Sweet!

Imagine 15 years ago thinking about career opportunities. Would "3D Food Engineer" have come to mind? What does that even mean? 3D Systems is working with the Culinary Institute of America where students and faculty are printing 3 dimensional culinary delights on the chefjet pro such as chocolate roses and geometric sugar cubes. 3D Printing is being integrated into the professional kitchen- now that's pretty sweet. It not only makes sense but is already a reality and in my opinion is a perfect example of STEAM education and the importance of collaboration and team based communication.
  • Food SCIENCE
  • Printing TECHNOLOGY to Create the edible
  • 3D Modeling & ENGINEERING
  • Creative ARTistic Design
  • MATH calculations
Maybe we should combine math with Engineering and save the M for MARKETING. This is big. Budding engineers getting out their ipads

Who am I? Where am I?

Let's start with the where - Wilmington, NC

Bakagain Inc Furniture is located near Historic Wilmington and the beautiful southeast island beaches where inspiration has no limits. The view leading into Wrightsville beach as you cross the intracoastal bridge brims with boating activity from kayaks and paddle boards to sail boats, motor boats and of course of yachts. When walking on the beach, it's impossible not to be thankful for and inspired by the panoramic beauty. White sands with oyster shells and busy sandpipers, warm emerald water, surfers working the waves, fishermen, and the vast blue sky with hands down the most beautiful clouds. When the pelicans fly overhead you can see the wing structure and hear their power as they head out to the ocean for the catch of the day. Downtown Wilmington is full of life with visitors, residents and students patronizing restaurants, craft beer breweries, speciality shops, live music and art shows. The town is anchored by the Battleship Carolina which also serves as the backdrop to the summer concert series. Every Friday night Front Street and the River Walk Rock and it's free!

What’s the (Anchor) Point?

As I worked on a clipping path in photoshop I noticed the sweeping curves on our Recoil Chair. First let me explain anchor points and clipping paths in simple terms. For quality printing purposes you need to "clip" away the background to create a silhouette of your image (clipping path). To do so you click around the hard/straight edges of your image making anchor points. You click and drag to create curved anchor points. Then you can adjust the curves by dragging the "handlebars". If you look closely at this screen shot from my photoshop file you can see the actual anchor points. Recoil Chair from OFM Design with sweeping curves Maybe I should get back to the point. Our Recoil Chair has a super comfortable spring back frame, a 400 lb weight capacity, comes in 6 beautiful anti-microbial / anti-bacterial colors and affordable at $339. These features make the Recoil chair a great choice for your lobby, think tank or lounge. But I also appreciate the graceful design that stopped me in the middle of my photoshop project. I felt compare to share my revelation about the sweeping curves of our Recoil chair as I created the curves in my clipping path. The point? If you want comfort and beautiful design that's affordable see more about our Recoil Lounge Seating or give us at Bakagain Inc Furniture 336-701-2333. OFM Inc. Model #841 Recoil Lounge Chair

7 fun ways tudents use Tablet computers in the class room

7 Fun Ways Students Use Mobile Devices

7 Fun Ways Students Use Mobile Devices in the Classroom Students consistently report that they learn more when mobile devices are incorporated into lessons by their teachers. Some are even leading the charge for more technology in the classroom.

So how do students use their mobile devices during the school day – and afterwards outside of class?

  1. Record themselves reading on their iPods to perfect pronunciation. Viva el Espanol!
  2. Create videos and record audio over the top explaining how they got their answers.
  3. Send vocabulary words back and forth from classrooms.
  4. Actively engage with the video they’re watching by answering questions on their device.
  5. Hide videocaches and use geocaching.com so members of the public can search for them.
  6. Make “videoconference-pals” with students in other countries.
  7. Play “Mystery Skype” with other classrooms and try to guess where they’re located.
Recent research suggests that 41% to 66% of K-12 students in the U.S. had access to mobile devices, such as tablets, at school or home. That’s according to “A New Digital Playbook: Understanding the Spectrum of Students’ Activities and Aspirations,” a report from the educational nonprofit, Project Tomorrow, which polled 3.4 million students, teachers, administrators, and parents in late 2013. The above Information was made available thanks to our valued mobile device charging partner Anthro Manufacturing written by by Jebra Turner For more information on Tablet Charging Solutions call Bakagain Inc at 336-701-1333

STEM saves ART

STEM saves ART

Stem Science Technology Engineering Math Over the past decade music and art have sadly been reduced or eliminated from the education budget. Luckily our public school at the time did not follow that unfortunate trend. I remember sitting at the kitchen counter with our son's friend who expressed that he didn't have time to take art because of all of his other IMPORTANT classes. I said "Colby, you can't really feel that art is unimportant - do you?" He really did feel that way. This is the same kid that went on to be at the top of his class and is currently studying to be an engineer. I wonder if now in his second year in college, he thinks about art with a new perspective. Our other son's friend Kathy was always a clever girl, and it was apparent from when she was just a toddler. She also went on to study engineering - industrial engineering. Kathy and I had a chance to catch up when she was on break from school and I asked her how it was going. She said the "math" was very challenging and she and her "artist" friends had to work pretty hard to keep on track. But many of the "Math and Techie" oriented students struggled with the art classes. What a valuable observation. I'd like to think that when Kathy was busy collecting her objects from nature and arranging them in forts made from pool towels and chairs that she was really in the early stages of her education by combining her artistic talents with her science curiosity that ultimately lead her to study industrial engineering. So thank you STEM for saving ART!  Stem, Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics & ART. Note: I was inspired to write this memory after seeing the beautiful patterns in the ice along a sandy trail. Which patterns developed during the freezing process? Which were caused by the warmth of the sun and which by the elements around them. I may not entirely understand the science behind the patterns but I sure appreciate the natures beauty.
